Native Americans
American Indians: Answers to Today's Questions by Jack Utter |

Does the U.S. government still make treaties with tribes? What are Indian self-determination and tribal sovereignty? How many American Indians are there? If you can answer these questions, you are way ahead of most Americans! Written by a non-Indian sensitive to the issues of concern to American Indians, this book goes a long way to knock down many of the dangerous stereotypes that haunt Indian people today. |

| Land of the Burnt Thigh: A Lively Story of Women Homesteaders on the South Dakota Frontier by Edith Eudora Kohl |
$12.95 |
Among the hordes of homesteaders who settled the American West were thousands of single women who hoped to gain for themselves a piece of land and the money and satisfaction that came with it. The memoirs of many of these self-described "girl homesteaders," long ignored by historians, show the significant impact these women had on their communities. Edith Eudora Ammons and her sister Ida Mary traveled to the "Land of the Burnt Thigh" - The Lower Brule Indian Reservation - in 1907. These two women worked to build community and "prove up" their claim. They started a newspaper, a school, battled prairie fires, and a blizzard. |

$12.95 |
The last significant clash of arms in the American Indian Wars took place on December 29, 1890 on the banks of Wounded Knee Creek in South Dakota. Of the 350 Sioux Indians there, two thirds were women and children. When the smoke cleared, 84 men and 62 women and children were dead. Of some 500 soldiers and scouts, about 30 were dead - some from their own crossfire. Wounded Knee continues to be a controversial, emotional issue in American history. American Heritage describes this as "the most unbiased account" of all. |
