Capt. Reid, of the U. S. sloop of war Hornet, passed through Philadelphia on the 18th Sept. on his return from Washington City, to join his ship, which was to sail immediately after his arrival in New-York, for Cadiz, with dispatches for our Minister at that court.

We understand that captain Porter is appointed to the command of the Columbia, of 74 guns. It is supposed she will go to sea next spring. [Phil. Gaz.

A Duel was fought on an island in the river below this town, on Monday, 20th Sept. between col. John Smith, T. and Mr. Lionel Brown, in which the latter was shot through the head in the first fire, and fell dead on the ground.
