Wineine and brandy made from the fruit grown at Arlington and on other Custis farms were stored in the Wine Cellar. Proper storage of wine was a matter of concern to the Custis and Lee proprietors of Arlington House, as it was to any substantial household of the day,and this cool room offered a good environment for keeping barrels. Mr. Custis inherited choice wines from his father and grandmother. Valued as a beverage as well as for its medicinal uses, wine required special care to prevent spoilage and pilferage.
