Miss Mary's Chamber he
Lee's eldest daughter, Mary, lived in this corner bedchamber, the only Lee child
to have her own room. She had an independent and bossy personality and was called
"Sister" by
her three younger sisters, none of whom wanted to live with her. But
like all other family members, Miss Mary was expected to share her
room with relatives and friends, which were numerous at Arlington House, and two
beds sit in this room. The Lee's cousin, Markie Williams, was a frequent
guest here often staying for months at a time. Additionally, the Marquis de Lafayette
stayed in this room during his visit to Arlington in 1824.

Located
on the front of the house, the room offers a great view of the Potomac river and
Washington, D.C. Today visitors see several original pieces in the room, including
a photo album which once belonged to Mary and a portrait of Markie Williams. |
