Biographies

George Washington Parke Custis and his slaves built Arlington House between 1802-1818. Custis and his wife, Mary, raised their only surviving daughter, Mary Anna Randolph Custis at Arlington and then welcomed Robert E. Lee into the family in 1831 when he and Mary were married in the family parlor. Between 1831-1861, the Lees raised their seven children at Arlington and Martha Custis "Markie" Williams, a cousin to the Lees, was a frequent visitor to the mansion.
