Chronology of Antietam

1830s Sherrick House built.
Piper House built.
1836 Burnside Bridge built.
1844 Pry House built (not fully documented).
1852 Original Dunker Church built.
1865 March 23--State of Maryland established Antietam National Cemetery.
1866 Stone wall completed around National Cemetery.
1867 Iron fence and gate completed around National Cemetery.
1867 Cemetery Lodge House completed.
1880 September 17--U.S. Soldier Statue at National Cemetery dedicated (cornerstone laid 1867).
1890 August 30--Antietam National Battlefield established (second Civil War park established in country). Administered by War Department.
1896 Observation Tower was built under the administration of the War Department (Engineer Lamont).
1896-98 Gathland--War Correspondent's Memorial Arch-- built by George Alfred Townsend.
1900 May 30--Maryland Monument dedicated.
1903 McKinley Monument dedicated.
1920 New York Monument dedicated.
1921 May--Dunker Church destroyed by wind and hailstorm.
1933 Antietam National Battlefield transferred from U.S. Army to National Park Service.
1961-62 Dunker Church rebuilt.
1962 Visitor Center completed.
1997 Virtual Visitors' Center opened (September 12) on the Internet.
