Letter from Gerard Uythoven,
of Schulmerich Carillons
November 16, 1995

"How the Carillon came to be on Saipan"

"Ambassador Haydn Williams and I met at the National Cemetery in the Netherlands at Margraten. We were introduced to each other by Mr. Arthur Klingel Jr., the National Commander of AMVETS.

I was installing a system for the AMVETS at the cemetery and Ambassador Williams was there for the dedication ceremonies of the Carillon on September 14, 1994. He said that it would be beautiful if we could do the same for Saipan. I gave Ambassador Williams on of my business cards and told him that if he would like some information on Carillon Systems that I would send it to him. After about nine months of negotiations between Ambassador Williams and Schulmerich Carillons, this system came to be at American Memorial Park, Saipan. It is amazing what a little talk over lunch can do. We have now had a dedication of a Carillon on Saipan on November 11, 1995.

"...AS THESE BELLS RING...HONORED DEAD REST...FREEDOM LIVES..."

I am the Field Service Engineer for Schulmerich Carillons. I am also a Veteran and I am retired from the U.S. Air Force.

I wish to thank everyone who helped with the installation of the Carillon and Tower Bells, especially Brian Strack (American Memorial Park Facility Manager) who did an outstanding job; much better than what was required".
