Amistad Amphibian and Reptile List
A listing of all species recorded in Amistad National Recreation Area is provided. A Sul Ross collection, dating back from 1964 to 1989 lists 78 specimens representing 22 species and subspecies. The list provided is a compilation of species historically collected from the Amistad area. There has been one sighting of Chrysemys cocinna texana (Texas slider), but no voucher specimen was collected (Lobello 1976). Scaphiopus bombifrons (Plains spadefoot) and Scaphiopus multiplacatus (New Mexico spadefoot) are not listed because they are only hypothetically supposed to appear in the area. One small road survey was conducted on June 15, 1999 that confirmed six species. These species included the following: Bufo speciousus (Texas Toad), Scaphiopus couchi (Couch's spadefoot), Bufo debilis (Green Toad), Syrrhophus warnocki (Cliff chirping frog), Bufo valliceps (Gulf Coast Toad), and Bufo punctatus (Red spotted toad). On 5/11/00, one Gastrophyrne olivacea (Plains Narrow-mouthed Toad) was discovered below Amistad Dam. To our knowledge, no other recent survey has been conducted to officially confirm all species listed.
