LAKE AMISTAD CONDITIONS EXCELLENT
Lake Amistad conditions are excellent and the water level is the highest it’s
been in 6½ years, according to Amistad National Recreation Area Superintendent
Alan Cox. Cox said, “August 1997 was the last time the reservoir was at
today’s level, 185 feet deep at the dam. In fact, that year the level
only briefly reached the same depth before dropping again.” Spring 1995
was the last time the lake stayed at this level for a period of time.
Superintendent Cox also added that the spectacular prehistoric pictographs at Panther Cave are now accessible by boat, and the Blackbrush boat ramp is open. Cox continued, “Lake conditions are excellent for fishing and boating, and seeing the rock art is a fun trip for the whole family. We continue to emphasize, however, that whatever the lake level, Amistad is still a big lake. Anglers have discovered that fishing is great at nearly every water level. Visitors can come by our new Visitor Information Center on Highway 90W near Blackbrush boat ramp for more information- we’re now open weekends, too.”
Amistad National Recreation Area's visitor information center is located on US Highway 90W near Blackbrush boat ramp, Del Rio TX, and is open daily 8am-5pm, except Thanksgiving Day, December 25, and January 1. For more information, visitors may call 830.775.7491, tune in to AM 1540 near the lake, or visit the park's web site at www.nps.gov/amis.
