4th ANNUAL VAL VERDE COUNTY ARCHEOLOGY FAIR
Special demonstrations and activities are planned for the 4th Annual Val Verde County Archeology Fair Saturday, October 16. The fair is sponsored by Amistad National Recreation Area, the Whitehead Memorial Museum, and the SHUMLA School. The fair coincides with Texas Archeology Month, a time for all ages to be aware of our rich heritage and the need for its preservation.
The Archeology Fair will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Whitehead Memorial Museum, 1308 S. Main Street, Del Rio. It is open to the public and includes exhibits, demonstrations and hands-on and interactive activities. Joining the Fair this year will be a chuckwagon demonstration by Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, the Bexar County Buffalo Soldiers Association, and traditional songs and dancing by the Queton family, members of the Kiowa tribe.
You can watch a blacksmith working with metal, paint your own rock art and painted pebbles, and throw a spear using an atlatl, a prehistoric hunting tool. Learn how to make wooden flutes, practice grinding corn with a stone metate and mano, and make an adobe brick, or try your hand at making pinch and coil pottery, learn about frontier life and watch as flintknappers demonstrate how to make stone tools.
Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for children and covers both the Archeology Fair and the museum exhibits. For more information, call Lisa Evans at (830) 775-7491 ext. 223.
