My earliest memory is
the blackout rules. At nighttime, we were not allowed to have light
showing. When the sunset, all windows in our home were covered with
dark material to shut out every speck of light. This routine became
a part of our everyday life. I recall the nervous feelings within
my family during these days. I was too young to know what was happening,
but I knew it was important. I also remember being very scared.
Then came the warning sirens, loud like a fire truck screaming,
telling us to drop everything and head for the "dug outs", or bomb
shelters. They were only practice drills at first. But soon, they
