The Artists-in-Residence program at Agate Fossil Beds National Monument is a reflection of the friendship that James Cook had with the Lakota people.
During the 1890s and early 1900s, Cook invited old friends such as Red Cloud and American Horse to his ranch on the Niobrara River. Many a story was told about the old days and all who attended presented gifts such as moccasins, war clubs, ceremonial shirts and other prized possessions.
Each summer, the staff at Agate continues the legacy of James Cook by inviting Indian artists back to the Niobrara Valley. In the past, artists have brought skills handed down by elders in creating beautiful bead and quill work, hide paintings and decorated gourds.
