      Acreage

      Acadia comprises over 47,000 acres:

      • 30,300 acres on Mount Desert Island.
      • 2,728 acres on Isle au Haut
      • 2,266 acres on Schoodic Peninsula
      • 10,452 acres in conservation easements
      • 1,110 other acres

      Air Quality

      The park has two air quality monitoring sites (McFarland Hill and Cadillac Mountain) that are operated in cooperation with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. Pollutants monitored include ozone, nitrogen oxides, fine particulates, visibility, mercury, acid deposition, UV-b radiation, precipitation, and other meteorological parameters.

      Bridge Heights

      The heights listed below are Federal Highway Administration recommendations for vehicle height restrictions on bridges on the Park Loop Road. Taller vehicles should plan their route in advance. Locations are indicated on official park map, which can be downloaded in several formats from the NPS maps website.

      • From October 7 to March 6 Cadillac Mountain is the first place in the United States where you can see the sun rise.

      • Cadillac Mountain is the only mountain in Acadia National Park with an auto road to the summit.

      Visitation

      • The park receives over two million visitors a year.
      • Busiest months are July, August, and September.
      • Slowest months are December, January, and February.

      Wildlife

      • Eleven species of amphibians have recently been identified on park lands and two other species have been historically reported in the park.

      • Over 273 species of birds have been identified on Mount Desert Island and in the adjacent waters.

      • Twenty-one wood warblers nest on Mount Desert Island.

      • Twenty-four species of fish have been found in island lakes and ponds, including several species that are introduced.

      • Over a thousand species from 18 phyla of invertebrates have been reported from the park and Mount Desert Island area.

      • Insect inventories completed in the late 1940s reported over 6,500 species and subspecies of insects for the Mount Desert Island area. Additional species have been identified.

      • Forty mammal species have been identified on park lands and more than a dozen other terrestrial and marine mammals have been identified on adjacent lands or water bodies.

      • Seven species of reptiles have recently been identified on park lands and four other species have been historically reported on the island.
