Evaluation

The National Park Service has clear goals for its interpretation and education programs for its audiences. However, NPS has very little scientifically valid data about the direct outcomes and impact of those programs.

To gain such data and learn to improve our programs, the NPS is exploring evaluation methodologies. The National Education Council's Education Evaluation Coordination team has developed an Evaluation Strategy for Interpretation and Education. Read the Executive Summary (.pdf 600KB); Volume One: The Strategy (.pdf 819 KB); and Volume Two: The Foundations (.pdf 1,374 KB).

Within that strategy, evaluation is a tool to ensure that programs are continuously effective. The strategy outlines action steps to improve communication, training, knowledge, and information management, all of which should help strengthen evaluation practices at all levels of the NPS.
