Summary | As the pinnacle port of eighteenth and nineteenth century New England, what is now Salem Maritime National Historic Site contains many historic structures, including the Custom House, Bonded Warehouse, Scale House, Derby House and Hawkes House. Its collection of historical objects consists primarily of household and Customs Service furnishings; shipping and warehousing equipment and materials; documentary material, which includes the papers of 18th century privateer and wharfinger James Chevers, Jr., as well as miscellaneous Customs Service forms and documents; and archeological material. |
