Overview
On March 26, 2012, the Stegall Mountain Prescribed Burn was conducted at Ozark National Scenic Riverways. This was a joint prescribed burn conducted with Missouri Department of Conservation and The Nature Conservancy. Prescribed burn bosses from all three organizations provided oversight for the 4,010 acre prescribed burn which, added to the Denning Hollow and Thorny Mountain sub-units burned earlier in the season, brought the total acreage for the Stegall Mountain complex to 5,354 acres. Crews on the ground blacklined the perimeter of the unit, with interior ignition conducted by the NPS/USFS jointly contracted Type 3 helicopter using a plastic sphere dispenser.
Vegetation Affected Mixed hardwoods/pine
Benefits of the Burn
Resource objectives are to maintain and expand glade complexes and increase native species diversity, to reduce the density of understory woody species and slash, and to reduce hazardous fuel loading and improve protection of infrastructure in the WUI.
Values to be Protected
This prescribed burn will specifically improve protection for a communications tower, fire lookout tower, state and federal buildings, and private residences and cultural sites in close proximity to the burn unit.
Partners Involved
Firefighters from Ozark National Scenic Riverways, Black Hills Wildland Fire Module, Midwest Regional Office, U.S. Forest Service, Missouri Department of Conservation, The Nature Conservancy, and Americorps participated in the prescribed burn.
