Overview
The George Washington Carver Prescribed Burn was conducted on March 5, 2012, at George Washington Carver National Monument near Diamond, Missouri. Firefighters burned 88 acres in four prescribed burn units. This prescribed burn was managed successfully by the Missouri Park Group while simultaneously conducting the Welch Lodge Prescribed Burn at Ozark National Scenic Riverways.

Benefits of the Burn
The objectives of this project are to encourage the growth of native species, control and diminish exotic species invasion, and reduce hazard fuel accumulation.
Values to be Protected
George Washington Carver National Monument preserves the 240-acre homestead that was the birthplace and childhood home of scientist George Washington Carver. The site of the slave cabin where Carver was born, the historic family cemetery, and various park administrative facilities were in close proximity to the burn units.
Partners Involved
Firefighters from Ozark National Scenic Riverways, Buffalo Wildland Fire Module, Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, and Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Network participated in this burn.
