Overview
On Monday, February 27, 2012, National Park Service firefighters partnered with crews from Missouri Department of Conservation, The Nature Conservancy, and Americorps to conduct the Thorny Mountain Southwest prescribed burn. This burn unit encompasses a portion of Peck Ranch Conservation Area and lands administered by The Nature Conservancy and is a critical portion of the larger Stegall Mountain prescribed burn complex that is scheduled to be burned this spring.

Benefits of the Burn
Resource objectives for this prescribed burn are to maintain and expand glade complexes, increase native species diversity, reduce the density of understory woody species and slash, reduce hazardous fuel loading and improve protection of infrastructure in the wildland urban interface.

Values to be Protected
Ozark National Scenic Riverways preserves a number of historic structures relevant to Ozark culture. In addition, private dwellings are scattered in and around the park.

Partners Involved
Firefighters from Ozark National Scenic Riverways, Black Hills Wildland Fire Module, The Nature Conservancy, Missouri Department of Conservation, and Americorps participated in the burn.
