Commentary of a BLMer

As a current Bureau of Land Management (BLM) employee at the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC), I was excited for a detail opportunity with NPS Fire and Aviation Management.  Sure, I’ve worked with the NPS Communication and Education staff within the External Affairs group at NIFC, but those experiences haven’t revealed everything that occurs within the NPS office at NIFC.

It’s a fire whirl of activity within the NPS.  Programs including structural fire are not a part of my BLM vocabulary.  I’ve participated with the BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro program, but didn’t realize that aviation employees from the NPS assisted with those operations as well.  The NIFC-NPS workforce is as diverse as the operations that transpire within this agency’s office walls.

NIFC is a fine blueprint for interagency cooperation.  As an NPS outsider, it’s been interesting to be involved in a different agency, in conjunction with a larger collaboration.  The hustle and bustle of activity including wildland fire, structural fire and aviation has opened my eyes to the NPS Fire and Aviation realm.
