The Investigative Services Branch at Grand Canyon is seeking candidates for a temporary assignment of up to 120 days as a special agent. The actual length and estimated start date will be worked out with the supervisor of the person selected.
The person selected will work at the direction of a journeyman criminal investigator (special agent) with interstate responsibility for investigating known or suspected violations of Federal laws relating to park lands. She/he will be expected to conduct investigations and take law enforcement action in cases that are often sensitive or complex.
This temporary reassignment provides the opportunity for a park to send an employee for advanced criminal investigation training at minimal cost. This opportunity will allow the selected employee to improve his or her investigatory skills and bring them back to the park for future use. The selectee will be enrolled in the ISB special agent detailer program, which consists of formal objectives detailing the skills required to be an effective criminal investigator in the NPS.
Applicants must currently serve as GS-9/11/12 rangers with Type 1 law enforcement commissions.
Special notes:
- The ISB will pay for travel expenses and per diem to and from the home park, travel expenses and per diem for any TDY assignments outside of the Grand Canyon commuting area, and the salary associated with law enforcement availability pay (LEAP).
- Lodging during the detail will be provided in government quarters.
- Daily per diem expenses while in the commuting area will not be authorized for the detail period in accordance with the Government Employees Training Act.
- The employee’s home park will be responsible for the employee’s base salary
- Extensive, and often short-notice, travel may be required.
- LEAP is approved for this position to compensate employees for unscheduled duty in excess of the 40-hour workweek. This includes “callout” responses to after-hours criminal incidents.
- In accordance with Executive Order 12564, applicants selected for this position are required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is a drug-testing designated position subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
- Applicants must possess Level 1 NPS law enforcement commissions.

- A copy of your most recent performance appraisal and Notification of Personnel Action (SF-50) showing position title, series and grade. Applicants unable to provide their most recent performance appraisal must provide written justification for its absence.
- A letter from your immediate supervisor indicating approval for this reassignment.
The KSA for this position is as follows:
- Knowledge of basic criminal investigative principles and techniques such as interviewing witnesses, interrogating suspects, using informants, obtaining search warrants, searching for evidence, obtaining arrest warrants, and conducting surveillance.
