SHENANDOAH NATIONAL PARK
Two Sentenced For Auto Break-ins
During a two week period in April, 2012, rangers responded to several incidents involving thefts from motor vehicles (car clouts) in the North District. Evidence indicated that the same people were involved in all of the break-ins. Through a ranger’s investigative efforts, it was discovered that similar crimes had occurred in other jurisdictions in the Shenandoah area – from Front Royal at the parks’ north end to communities in Maryland. Utilizing credit card information from the victims, the ranger worked closely with the neighboring law enforcement agencies to acquire video surveillance of the suspects using the stolen credit cards. Through the ranger's investigation, officers from five different jurisdictions were able to link the suspects to numerous open cases. Four of them had been arrested at the time of this report; two were found guilty on federal charges and are paying restitution to park visitors.
