North Cascades National Park Complex, comprised of North Cascades National Park, Ross Lake National Recreation Area and Lake Chelan National Recreation Area, is currently seeking applicants interested in a lateral reassignment to a GL-9 protection ranger position.
The complex has some of the most spectacular mountain wilderness in the country and offers exceptional recreational opportunities, including hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, mountaineering, hunting, motorized and non-motorized boating, skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and boating. Responsibilities include the full range of law enforcement, emergency medical service, search and rescue, and resource protection duties. This a required occupancy position, duty stationed at Newhalem in the Skagit District of Ross Lake National Recreation Area.
The person selected will work full time in a primarily frontcountry position that covers 30 miles of scenic highway and the associated campgrounds (370 sites), overlooks and trailheads. The ranger will supervise from one to three seasonal rangers, monitor special use permits, educate park visitors about park resources and regulations, and work closely with and build relations with adjacent agencies and partners.
Typical summer weather in Newhalem is mostly sunny with highs in the 80’s and lows in the 50’s. Typical winter weather is often rainy with highs in the 40’s and lows in the 30’s. Newhalem gets occasional snow accumulation in the winter, with deep accumulation in nearby mountains.

Possession of a level I law enforcement commission and current EMT certification are required. The position is subject to drug testing and all physical fitness testing and training requirements for law enforcement duty. Travel, transportation and relocation expenses will be authorized in accordance with P.L. 89-516 and appropriate Federal regulations.
