Early last Friday morning, Dutchess County 911 contacted the park and advised that a canoe with three men aboard had capsized in the Hudson River. One of the three, Michael Maurer of Hyde Park, managed to swim to shore at Vanderbilt National Historic Site and alerted authorities from a nearby apartment complex. A search was begun that included NPS rangers, the Hyde Park Police Department, Dutchess County Sheriff’s Department scuba and marine units, New York State Police scuba and aviation units, the Coast Guard, New York State environmental conservation police and forest police, and Roosevelt, Staatsburg and Hyde Park Fire Departments. The two missing men, Barrett Raymond of Hyde Park and Baylin Coddington of Millbrook, New York, have not been found. The search was discontinued at dusk on Friday evening, but was to continue over the weekend.
