[Printer-friendly text version]

The Facility Manager Leaders Program (FMLP) is now accepting applications for the class to be held in the coming year, the seventh since the program was launched. Applications will be accepted from today, October 1st, through January 11th.

Details on how to apply are available on DOI Learn.  All applicants will be sent the link to an on-line application, and then placed on a wait list in DOI Learn until selections are announced by March 1st.

The Facility Manager Leaders Program is an education and development program based on the latest adopted competencies for facility managers in the National Park Service. This program provides a wide variety of educational opportunities, many of which are tailored to the individual’s development needs. The course of study prepapres candidates to lead responsible stewardship and protection of the assets of the National Park Service.

This award winning curriculum is designed to develop and strengthen the knowledge and competencies of selected employees through a year-long education and training program that proactively builds capabilities in asset management, operations and maintenance, project management, resource stewardship, business management, supervision and leadership.

New facility managers, first line supervisors, and any other permanent employee ready to take the next career step into a chief of maintenance position are encouraged to apply. Three residential classroom courses anchor the class as a cohort in basic asset management, advanced facility management, and leadership. In addition, the program includes two distributed learning sessions (independent, competency based study), made up of intensive developmental activities, and assignments, attendance at two additional residential classes, and monthly web conferences.

The distributed learning sessions may require that the student be away from their park for a period of time. Students who complete the program’s requirements are eligible to receive a certificate of completion.

Applicants who are admitted to the FMLP sign an agreement acknowledging their required involvement in course work, assessment, and evaluation of their performance in the individual courses and learning events, as well as other requirements for successful completion.

Progression of students is monitored carefully. If a student is failing, s/he will be advised of the need to improve, and the appropriate selecting official (regional chief) and the student’s supervisors will be notified.

To be considered as a student for the FMLP, applicants must attend the following training events:

  • Principles of Asset Management class – May 6 – May 10, 2013
  • Distributed Learning Session 1 – TBD (developmental activity travel, usually one to two weeks during the period of May - September)
  • Interdisciplinary Resource Protection and the Law class – TBD (sometime between May and September)
  • Advanced Facility Management Practices class – October 21 - November 1, 2013

Completed applications must be received by close of business on January 11th.
