Facilities: Sleeps up to 6 people. Includes six wooden bunks, a work counter, table with chairs, diesel oil stove (fuel is provided), fire extinguisher, informational bulletin board, and smoke detector. Has a pit toilet. Fresh water is available nearby but it must be treated. Not included: Running water, electricity, mattress or bedding, cooking utensils.
Location: Located on the northeasterly shore of Holgate Arm in Aialik Bay (a 4 hour boat trip or 35 minute flight from Seward). Refer to USGS map, Blying Sound D-8.
Terrain/Vegetation: Open spruce forest, boggy ground, abundant blueberries in late August. Cabin elevation is just above sea level.
Recreation: Kayaking, boating, wildlife viewing, photography, and limited hiking. Spectacular views and sounds of calving ice from Holgate Glacier. Limited fishing opportunities within the salt water for halibut and rockfish (year round), and along the beaches at Pedersen Lagoon for red (late June to late July) and silver (late Aug. to late Sept.) salmon and dolly varden. A boat is required for access to these fisheries. Review Alaska Department of Fish and Game fishing regulations.
Wildlife: Black and brown bears, mountain goat, humpback whales, sea otters, salmon, sea birds and other marine mammals.
Specific Consideration: There are numerous bugs; headnets are highly recommended during the months of July and August. Heavy ice pack in Holgate Arm can make boating, kayaking and beach landings difficult at times. Expect to see tour boats daily.
Reservations: Occupancy of Holgate Arm cabin is by permit only ($50.00 per night) on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations are accepted, beginning January 2nd, for May 22 - September 20, by phone, mail or in person at the Seward Visitor Center. Information and reservations may be obtained by calling (907) 224-3175. High demand for this cabin requires that reservations be limited to a maximum of three nights within the calendar year. Individuals in the same party are not allowed to make sequential reservations in order to exceed the three night limit. Occupancy begins and ends at noon on the assigned days. To cancel, notification is required at least 10 days in advance of scheduled trip. NO CASH REFUNDS. Credit is given towards another cabin if reserved within the calendar year. No credit for cancellations with less than 10 days notice. Cabin users must have their permit while on site.
