Program:      The Golden Age of Battlefield Preservation and the Formation of AntietamNational Battlefield – Timothy B. Smith. Our speaker, the author of a new book on the subject will discuss how Civil War veterans and the Federal government, joined forces to create the first five military parks in the country. One of the earliest of these is Antietam National Battlefield. Smith is a former park ranger at ShilohNationalMilitaryPark and currently is a college history professor.

Description:  This hike will explore the terrain and fighting around the MiddleBridge.

Description:  The speaker’s new biography of Stuart will have just been released a few days prior to this event. Confederate cavalry leader General J.E.B. Stuart played an important role in both the campaign and battle of Antietam. Find out how he nearly caused Lee’s army great loss at SouthMountain and how he helped save the day on the Confederate left at the Battle of Antietam. Jeffry Wert is the author of seven previous books on the Civil War. His Gettysburg: Day Three was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize.

Description: Die Like Men: Don’t Run Like Dogs”: The PennsylvaniaReserves at Antietam The Pennsylvania Reserves were sent in at the beginning of the Battle of Antietam and fought there throughout the morning, suffering heavy casualties. Based on the research for his highly acclaimed book on the 8th Pennsylvania Reserves, Mr. Eberly will present a lively presentation on the fighting in the “Cornfield” and East Woods using numerous first hand soldier accounts.

A special hike, Morning in the Cornfield, will meet at tour stop 4, The Cornfield. This program starts at 7:00 a.m. and will last an hour. An all day hike of the battlefield will take place Wednesday, September 17th. The hike will be in two parts with the first one starting at 9:00 a.m. near the park visitor center. The afternoon hike will begin at the National Cemetery Parking Lot, on the north side of MD. RT. 34 across from the National Cemetery. The starting time for this program is 1:30 p.m. and the hike will end back at the lot at approximately 5:00 p.m.

Did You Know?

William McKinley as a soldier and president.

William McKinley served at Antietam as a Commissary Sergeant in the 23rd Ohio Infantry before becoming the nation’s 25th President. A monument to him at Antietam was dedicated in his memory on October 13, 1903, two years after he was assassinated.
