New Flagpole

New flagpole at the National Cemetery.
On June 4, 2008, an early summer storm ripped through the battlefield. In addition to over 100 trees being toppled, the flagpole at the National Cemetery was severely bent. Recently the Cemetery was closed for a few days and a new flagpole was put in place. The new pole is all aluminum and is four feet taller than the previous one, standing eighty feet tall. |

Henry Kyd Douglas, the youngest staff officer for Gen. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson was a native of the Sharpsburg area. His family home was just 4 miles west of the Battlefield. His uniform and personal library are part of the Battlefield collection.
