On June 4, 2008, an early summer storm ripped through the battlefield. In addition to over 100 trees being toppled, the flagpole at the National Cemetery was severely bent.
Recently the Cemetery was closed for a few days and a new flagpole was put in place. The new pole is all aluminum and is four feet taller than the previous one, standing eighty feet tall.
