Saturday, September 12

Attacks of the I and XII Corps
Time: 8:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.
Notes: The hike will begin and end at the Antietam Battlefield Visitor Center. This hike will be an in-depth look at the action surrounding the attacks of the I and XII Corps.

The Attack of Sumner’s Corps
Time: 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.
Notes: This hike will follow the advance of Sedgwick’s Division into the West Woods as well as the attacks upon the Sunken Road. The hike will begin and end at the Antietam Battlefield Visitor Center and include a visit to the Locher Cabin.

Sunday, September 13

Middle and Lower Bridge
Time: 8:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.
Notes: The hike will begin and end at the National Cemetery parking lot on MD Rt. 34. This program will explore the action of the V Corps near the Middle Bridge and the IX Corps attack on the Lower Bridge.

Attack of the IX Corps
Time: 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.
Notes: The IX Corps hike will explore the advance of Rodman and Wilcox’s Division toward the Harpers Ferry Road. The program will begin and end at The Lower Bridge, Tour Stop #9.

Monday, September 14-South Mountain Hikes

Fox’s Gap Morning Phase Hike
Time: 9 a.m.
1-1 1/2 miles, lasting approx. 1.5 hrs. Meet at Fox’s Gap. Reno Monument Rd.

Fox’s Gap Afternoon Phase Hike
Time:  2 p.m. 1-2 miles. Approx 2 hrs.
Meet at Old South Mt. Inn parking lot off of ALT. 40 (Old Nat’l Pike)

Crampton’s Gap Talk
Time:4 p.m. Lasting approx 1 hr.
Meet under War Correspondant’s Memorial Arch at Gathland Stat Park.

Thursday, September 17

A special hike, Morning in the Cornfield, will meet at tour stop 4, The Cornfield. This program starts at 7:00 a.m. and will last an hour.

An all day hike of the battlefield will be in two parts with the first one starting at 9:00 a.m. near the park visitor center. The afternoon hike will begin at the National Cemetery Parking Lot, on the north side of MD. RT. 34 across from the National Cemetery. The starting time for this program is 1:30 p.m. and the hike will end back at the lot at approximately 5:00 p.m.

The morning and afternoon hikes will each be four miles in length and the Morning in the Cornfield hike is one mile.


Did You Know?

15th Massachusetts Infantry Monument

The 15th Massachusetts Infantry went into the Battle of Antietam with 606 soldiers. 318 were killed or wounded, the highest number for any Union regiment in the battle. Their monument features a wounded lion carved in granite.
