Please help us make America's Best Idea even better. Join us for a national day of service and celebration in your 391 national parks.

Andrew Johnson National Historic Site will celebrate National Public Lands Day by honoring the veterans buried within the Andrew Johnson National Cemetery. Over 1600 headstones mark the graves of our American veterans and their families from wars, past and present. On National Public Lands Day, September 26, 2009 from 9 AM to 2 PM, the park will host a volunteer day to clean those headstones of our fallen heroes.

As part of this day the volunteers will preview the premier the Ken Burn’s series, The National Parks, America’s Best Idea. The series will air September 27, 2009 on local PBS stations.

cable portion

Did You Know?
A successful transatlantic cable was completed in 1866. This connected America and England by telegraph and helped tremendously with international communications. The original cable, completed in 1858, worked only three weeks. The Civil War and financial troubles interrupted the effort until 1865.
