ANDERSONVILLE, Georgia - Are you between the ages of 15 and 18, looking for employment, and like to work outside? Here is a wonderful opportunity to join the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC). Andersonville National Historic Site is looking for young men and women, ages 15 through 18, who work, learn, and earn together on projects that further the development and conservation of the natural resources of the United States.

The YCC is designed to provide summer employment/educational opportunities for youth from the local community in order to teach them hands-on work experience with the National Park Service. Along with learning valuable skills, the program is also designed to develop an understanding and appreciation for the natural and cultural resources in their community and throughout the country while helping the park reduce the number of backlogged projects.

The primary focus of this summer's work will be to improve the condition of Andersonville National Cemetery by adding additional soil to areas of the turf which need re-seeding, then watering the grass to provide a uniform appearance to the maintained landscape. Student employees will also work with the Gardener on other special projects within the park.

Period of employment will be eight weeks beginning on Monday, June 4 through Friday, July 27. The work schedule will be Monday through Friday beginning at 7:30 AM and ending at 4:00 PM with two 15-minute breaks (on in the morning and one in the afternoon) and one 30-minute lunch break. During the term of employment, you must be at least 15 years of age and not have reached age 19. Participants will be paid $7.25 per hour. Most all the work will be outdoors in direct sunlight with extensive exposure to hot, humid conditions of typical South Georgia summers. YCC students will be required to work with hand tools, topsoil, and grass seeds.

Appropriate dress attire includes the following:

  • NPS-provided YCC t-shirt
  • Employee may wear personal t-shirt until YCC t-shirt is provided
  • Jeans
  • Work boots
