Alaska’s first exploratory oil well was drilled in 1898 on the Iniskin Peninsula, Cook Inlet, by Alaska Petroleum Co. Oil was encountered in this first hole at about 700 feet but a water zone beneath the oil strata cut off the oil flow. Total depth of the well was approximately 1,000 feet.
