Staple Bend Tunnel Trail Open, Staple Bend Tunnel Close
The Staple Bend Tunnel is closed until further notice, but the Staple Bend Tunnel trail is open for use. Again, the tunnel, NOT THE TRAIL, is closed.
Please be aware that part of the public area loop has been closed until further notice as the park starts preparatory efforts for this summer's paving project on the Picnic Area Road.
The Portage Railroad traversed the Allegheny Mountains between Hollidaysburg and Johnstown, Pennsylvania, connecting the Eastern and Western Divisiions of the Pennsylvania Mainline Canal. The mountains represented a formidable obstacle in early transportation routes. The inclines and planes of the Allegheny Portage Railroad provided a unique engineering solution for transporting the canal boats across the mountains.
Did You Know?
The Conemaugh Viaduct was used by trains even after the Portage Railroad closed. The Johnstown Flood of 1889 washed the original viaduct away, but a replacement was completed within 3 days of the flood.
