Who We Are

The National Park Service's Community Resource

Imagine your part of Alaska with networks of improved public trails and miles of healthy rivers, and acres of protected publicly accessible lands--all supported by the hard work and vision of citizens, local groups and local government.  That's the mission of the Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance (RTCA) program of the National Park Service -- to help citizens and community leaders plan and advance locally-led conservation projects.

RTCA does not direct or fund projects, but when citizens and community leaders have decided to conserve close-to-home landscapes, RTCA can help them get started.

An Innovative Model

RTCA is a small, decentralized NPS program, with a staff of three conservation and recreation-planning professionals in Alaska and less than 100 nationwide. RTCA leverages expertise and experience from local efforts around the country to help Alaska communities set their priorities and achieve their goals. Local decision-making means that neighbors help neighbors protect and improve places they care about and build nature-based recreation opportunities for the future, based on their community priorities.

The RTCA program is an extremely cost-effective federal investment. With an annual outlay that represents less than one percent of the National Park Service budget, RTCA professionals around the country help dozens of local communities improve or protect miles of trails, waterways, and natural landscapes every year.
