FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program - Alaska Region Establishes Internet Presence

Alaska Region, RTCA (Rivers & Trails) Program publishes first website!

Today's Date --  While the program is a national branch of the National Park Service, it does not manage any land.  Rather, RTCA provides technical leadership, networking and facilitation opportunities across the state to a mix of peer partners - primarily local groups and local/state government.  RTCA partners in demonstration projects that have a wide application, in conservation organization start-ups, and projects with a high likelihood of conservation success (defined in acres of land or miles of trail or river protected through state or local action).

The new site contains information about the Alaska Region, history of the program in the state, partnering, online tools, including printable documents, where to find funding and links to other helpful organizations broken out by rivers, trails and greenway conservation; info on how to apply for assistance, current projects, related reading and recent media coverage.  We are putting as much valuable state-specific information as possible into the site.

The RTCA program envisions a citizen-driven effort to conserve our natural heritage through stewardship-oriented land and water use.  RTCA encourages this vision by supporting partnerships that provide outdoor recreation opportunities and preserve our natural heritage.  We help teach this conservation ethic, and help our cooperators take full advantage of existing government programs and local authority.  We are messengers for cooperative community-based conservation.  We believe that it is the state's citizens who, by acting together in partnership with government, will improve our quality of life by creating and sustaining healthy environments and economies.

The program takes on about 5-6 new projects per year, with a total, including continuing projects from the previous year, being 10-12 projects.
