Focus Concept: Migration

Sub-concepts: survival, adaptation, climate, navigation

Generalizations: Some animals migrate in order to survive. Animals need specific adaptations to know when, where and how to migrate. Researchers can study migration by tracking animals on their journey.

Information Sources: Migration Basics, Denali Golden Eagles and Migration, Climate Data Sources, Migration of Birds, Secrets of Animal Navigation, Golden Eagle Fact Sheet, Denali Golden Eagle Migration Datasets, Glossary of terms

Lesson Plans
Why do some animals migrate?

... how to define migration.

... how migration helps some animals to survive.

Science

Social Studies

... research facts about a migrating species

...use reasoning to explain why a species migrates.

...present information to the class.

Activity 1:
Exploring Migration

Students discuss migration and research specifics about a migrating species.

What are climate and seasons?

...how the earth's orbit around the sun affects climate and seasons.

...how climate varies across the globe.

Science

Geography

Social Studies

... use a globe to understand relationships between the earth and the sun.

... to create a climate map.

...research and describe their own climate.

Activity 2:
Modeling the Seasons

Students will explore climates around the world and how the earth's orbit around the sun affects them. Students will resarch and describe their local climate.

How do climate and seasons affect whether an animal would migrate and where?

... why animals may spend different seasons in different climates.

... what type of climate Denali has, and what its seasons are like. What eagles need that they can't get in the park year-round.

Science

Social Studies

...research data about movements and geography

...communicate through maps and diagrams

... how to use maps to process and report information from a spatial perspective

Activity 3:
Climate and Migration Patterns

Students will map migration routes of various species onto a climate map.

Why are there different types of migration?

... different species use different types of migration depending on their own life histories, environment and climate.

Science

Geography

Social Studies

...describe movements on the globe space

...translate data between maps and spatial models

Activity 4:
Spatial Migration Game

Students try to demonstrate and guess different migratory species.

What cues does an animal use to know when to migrate?

How do animals orient and navigate during migration?

...different animals use different senses to know when to migrate and how to navigate.

Science

...create hypthoses

...design an experiment

...perform an experiment

... record data

...draw conclusions

Activity 5:
Migration Cues

Students create hypotheses and design experiments to study migration and navigation.

Activity 6:
Homing Experiment

Students perform their own experiment on sense of direction in humans.

What types of adaptations do golden eagles have for migration?

... the physical and behavioral adaptations that help golden eagles to migrate long distances successfully

Science

...build a physical model of a biological system

...construct a physical model of written information

Activity 7:
Bird Modeling

Students construct a model of an eagle that highlights the migration adaptations

When do Denali golden eagles migrate? ... which season(s) they spend in Denali, when they leave, what season they spend outside the park, and when they return. Science

... review data and use it to answer scientific questions.

Activity 8:
Golden Eagle Life Cycle Diagram

Students diagram the life cycle including when eagles hatch and migrate.

How do researchers study migration patterns?

What can we learn from radiotracking golden eagles?

...how researchers use radiotracking data to answer a series of questions about migration patterns of golden eagles.

...where the Denali golden eagles migrate to, and the differences in their paths.

... most juveniles do not nest in Denali National Park and Preserve on their return north.

...the range of flight rates for golden eagles and how they compare between eagles, and the difference between flight rate and air speed.

Science

Math

Geography

Social Studies

...map coordinate information

...interpolate numbers between grid lines

...interpret mapped information

... use mapped information to answer research questions.

Activity 9:
Which Way Do We Go?

Students use real radiotracking data to follow the golden eagles on their migratory journey and answer research questions.

Activity 10:
The Race South

Students use real radiotracking data to calculate rates and distances of golden eagle migration.

What does migration mean for protecting the golden eagles that spend the breeding season in Denali National Park and Preserve? ... the difficulties NPS faces in protecting a species when it only spends part of the year in the park.

Science

... record data on population changes.

...simulate natural processes as a class.

...graph tabular data.

...analyze data (tabular and graphed) and simulated processes to answer questions.

Activity 11:
The Safe Zone

A game where students represent migrating eagles and the dangers along way. Data is collected and analyzed.

What is the role of Denali National Park and Preserve in conserving golden eagle populations in Alaska? ...the importance of national parks in preserving species. Science Final Activity
