Part 1: Planning a Trip: Then and Now

Before You Begin:

  1. Have materials available for brainstorming activity: chalkboard with chalk or chart paper and markers.
  2. Have materials available for creating postcards (index cards, paste/glue, photos/pictures of area wildlife and landscapes).
  3. Have available a map of the United States and a map of Kenai Fjords.
  4. Invite a travel agent to speak to the class about what planning a trip entails; or, lead a brainstorming session on the topic.
  5. Make sufficient copies of the following Handouts:

Procedures:
The procedures below are for all grades. An extension of this activity follows. It is designed for grades 6-8 and includes a third grouping - Future (early 2100s).

  • As a class, read Handout #1: Recreation and Tourism in the Early 1900s. What activities enticed travelers to Kenai Peninsula?
  • Using a map of the region (Alaska, Seward, and Kenai Fjords National Park), have students trace routes from their present location to the areas on the map.
  • Brainstorm and create a list of examples of how the trip would have changed over the last 100 years.
  • Guide students in researching how travel has changed from the early 1900s to the early 2000s.
  • Tell students they will become the Time Machine Travel Agency. Divide the class into two groups: Then (early 1900s) and Now (early 2000s). Distribute copies of Handout #2: Time Machine Travel Company and Handout #3: Supply List to each group.
  • Have the groups arrange package tours for tourists using time machine technology. Their assignment: Create client packages to Kenai Fjords for the group's assigned time period. Each group should include the following information:
    • Why to go there: Sites to explore, tours, activities of the area, sports (hunting and fishing)
    • When to go (based on research of climate/seasonal changes and weather of the area)
    • How to get there: modes of transportation, costs, and duration of each part of the journey
    • What to wear
    • Supplies (See Handout #3: Supply List - the list of what an early 1900s traveler packed)
    • Where to stay
    • Where to eat
    • Area maps
  • Have groups share their tour packages to compare and contrast changes over time: modes of transportation, duration of the trip, supplies needed, costs, activities, etc.
  • Have students create a bulletin board showing differences and similarities in the form of a large chart or Venn Diagram - Early 1900s, Early 2000s, and Items Included in Both Time Periods.
Extension: For their time period, challenge students to complete one of the following activities:
    • Make postcards by pasting online photos of area wildlife, landscapes and activities on an index card. Write poems on the reverse side of the card.
    • Create a travel brochure or multimedia presentation promoting the tour package.
    • Write a dialogue of what they would show and explain to tourists for one aspect of the trip.
    • Write letters back home explaining why the area is such a great place to visit.

Extension (Grades 6-8): Future Traveler EARLY 2100s)

Procedures: (for students assigned Early 2100s):

  • Have students assigned Early 2100s research current political trends toward conservation.
  • Then, conduct a class debate of the issue using Kenai Fjords as an example of a National Park impacted by political decisions and tourism.
  • Have the students write a position paper about the future of National Parks and how they could change over time.
Extension: Challenge students to complete one of the following activities:
    • Make postcards by pasting online photos of area wildlife, landscapes and activities on an index card. Write poems on the reverse side of the card.
    • Create a travel brochure or multimedia presentation promoting the tour package.
    • Write a dialogue of what they would show and explain to tourists for one aspect of the trip.
    • Write letters back home explaining why the area is such a great place to visit.
