  
Wildland fire has always been a reoccurring, significant, natural process in the boreal ecosystem of interior Alaska. However, the boreal ecosystem surrounds many interior Alaskan communities, rendering them islands, and susceptible to wildland fire. Because wildland fire occurs throughout interior Alaska and the threat of fire is a reality, fire communication and education in Alaska is an interagency effort which focuses on the natural role of fire, fire management, prevention and Firewise.

FIREWISE Alaska
The Alaska NPS Fire Communication and Education Program strives to educate all ages about wildland fire management and fire in Alaska. This is achieved through a cornucopia of venues, such as a fire trunk available for teachers, teacher workshops, Firewise workshops for NPS employees and communities adjacent to the parks, fire ecology programs for high school students, brochures, posters, displays and more. The program draws from a rich assortment of available fire material, some of which are listed below.
