| Kiska, one of the westernmost of the Aleutian Islands, was, along with Attu island, invaded and occupied by the Japanese in June 1942. In the months that followed, they constructed a number of military installations, but after the fall of Attu and successful American attacks on Japanese submarines, the enemy departed. The Japanese undetected withdrawal in July 1943 proved an embarrassment when an American force of 34,000 troops arrived to invade a deserted island 18 days later. | |||||||||
