Press Room: Hazardous Conditions Advisory for Users of the Yukon River in and around Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve

Large fires in and around the Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve have created hazardous conditions. There are numerous large active fires burning along and near the Yukon River making travel very dangerous at this time. Smoke conditions are constantly changing because of erratic and variable winds. Visibility may be as little as a few hundred feet on the river. Fire operations are active near and on the river. Because of the conditions, recreational boating on the Yukon River between the communities of Eagle and Circle is not recommended at this time. All boaters are encouraged to reschedule their trip. Very active fires are burning in the Coal Creek drainage around Slaven's Roadhouse and Coal Creek Camp. Because of these fires, this area is presently closed to public use. Fire teams are actively working in this area attempting to save historic structures. In addition, be advised that road travel to and from the river and surrounding areas may be restricted. The Taylor and Steese Highways have been closed intermittently due to fire and smoke conditions. Prior to departing down river from Eagle to Circle all recreational boaters should contact the National Park Service before proceeding. For specific information and an update on current conditions, please contact the Eagle Office of the Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve at 907-547-2233 or the Eagle Complex, Fire Use Management Team, information officer at 907-547-2310.
