Press Room: Eagle Complex Fire Update

Eagle Complex Fire Update: Alaska Fire Service Contact: Fire Information National Park Service Phone: 907 547-2310 Weather Allows Direct Attack on Deer Creek Eagle was blanketed in smoke all day yesterday due to a welcome inversion. This kept the fire activity to a minimum on the Deer Creek Fire. Operation plans to burnout from Mission Creek were canceled with the low visibility and moist air. Given the advantage of the weather, crews are planning a direct attack today. There will be 27 personnel in Eagle, along with assistance of engines, to continue structure protection there. Operations are working on further development of extending the fire break around the town of Eagle and the Villages. A new two acre fire, Dewey, was discovered two days ago. Plans are to suppress this fire as soon as conditions allow. The Taylor Highway between Tok and Eagle has numerous areas along its length that can have dangerous levels of fire activity and dense smoke. Motorists are warned that travel can be hazardous, despite the firefighters efforts to keep motorists moving safely, and that they are traveling at their own risk. Long delays can be expected during the active fire hours of 2:00pm and 9:00pm; some delays have been as long as eight hours. There will be a community meeting held today at 10:30 at Red Men Hall. The Woodchopper Fire was low in activity yesterday. Structure protection is still in place and being monitored by four remaining personnel at Coal Creek. .
