Press Room: Volunteers Seed Collectors Needed at Denali

National Park Service Needs Volunteer Seed Collectors Denali National Park and Preserve is seeking volunteers to hand collect seeds from the park’s native plants that will be used to maintain a seed bank for restoration and revegetation projects. There is a great need for seed due to the numerous projects currently taking place in the park, including the construction of new visitor facilities at the site of the old park hotel. Revegetation work has already begun even though the construction is still in progress. This year’s collecting effort will take place Tuesday, August 3 through Friday, August 6 along the first 15 miles of the park road. Volunteers will be instructed in seed identification, and should expect to work six to eight hours a day. The National Park Service will furnish the necessary tools and equipment, transportation within the park from the entrance and to and from the work site, and free camping in a tents only camping area. Volunteers will have the option of spending up to three additional nights in the campground at the end of the work session.Volunteers must provide their own camping equipment and food. They also should also bring plenty of warm clothes and rain gear, as the seed collection goes on rain or shine! If you would like to participate in this worthwhile effort please call Wendy Mahovlic at (907) 683-6246 or email her at wendy_mahovlic@nps.gov by Sunday, July 25. She is out of the office and in the field most days, but will respond as quickly as possible. For additional park information, please call (907) 683-2294 or check the website at www.nps.gov/dena.
