The National Park Service is accepting
public comment for two weeks on an environmental assessment for
a special use permit application for temporary access across Bering
Land Bridge National Preserve. The Alaska Department of Transportation
and Public Facilities, in cooperation with the Federal Highway
Administration, hopes to conduct reconnaissance level engineering
studies this spring in support of the Shishmaref Relocation Road
Project.
The NPS is considering this access request under Title XI of the
Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act of 1980 and its
implementing regulations at 43 CFR Part 36.3 as a pre-application
activity to obtain information for a possible future application
for a road across the preserve.
The studies would consider the potential for developing a suitable
material site near Ear Mountain with an access road connecting
the material site to a potential barge landing site in Shishmaref
Inlet, both sites outside of the preserve. The work would include
exploratory drilling along a route between Shishmaref Inlet and
Ear Mountain. A portion of this exploration route is within the
Bering Land Bridge National Preserve. The purpose of the special
use permit is to authorize temporary access across the preserve
to gather site-specific information on regional subsurface ground
conditions.
An environmental assessment
is available for public comment through March 26. The document
is available at http://parkplanning.nps.gov/publicHome.cfm.
From there, the documents will be found by selecting Bering Land
Bridge in the “Choose a Park Option.” The project identification
number is 21453.
Additional information may be obtained by calling Acting Superintendent
Ken Adkisson at the preserve office at (907) 443-6104 or Bud Rice
in the NPS Alaska Regional Office at 907-644-3530. Requests for
a printed copy of the environmental assessment may be obtained
from Bud Rice in the NPS Alaska Regional Office.
