Press Room: Sitka Superintendent Named to Fairbanks Post

Greg Dudgeon

Greg Dudgeon has been selected as Superintendent for Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve and Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve, according to Alaska Regional Director Marcia Blaszak. Dudgeon is scheduled to assume his new post in Fairbanks in December.

“The wilderness resources and cultural lifeways preserved by Gates of the Arctic and Yukon-Charley Rivers stir imaginations and inspire people the world over. To have a role in the stewardship of these incomparable national parks is exciting and humbling,” said Dudgeon.

Dudgeon has almost two decades of progressively responsible positions with the National Park Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service. He has served as park superintendent of Sitka National Historical Park since 2003 and prior to that managed Hovenweep National Monument in Colorado and Natural Bridges National Monument in Utah. Greg has broad Alaska experience, including work at remote locations in Arctic, Western, and Southeast Alaska. His accomplishments include the development of strong partnerships with communities, Alaska Natives, and American Indian tribes.

“Greg’s experience working in a variety of national parks in Alaska and his strong commitment to working collaboratively with community partners make this assignment a perfect match,” said Blaszak.

“Nearly 24 years ago I decided to make Alaska home,” Dudgeon explained. “I soon came to appreciate and value Alaska’s superlative national parks. I’ve had the great fortune of working with a variety of dedicated people and local communities over the years to help protect and share these special places with the American people.”

Greg graduated from the NPS Mid-Level Intake Program in 2003.  He subsequently served as the Chair of the Alaska Leadership Council and on the Servicewide Cultural Resources Advisory Council. He currently serves on the NPS National Safety Leadership Council.

Greg received a BA degree in Psychology and Communications from Biola University, La Mirada, California in 1983. He received a high school teaching credential from California State University San Bernardino in 1986. Greg and his wife, Sherry, have three school-age children, daughters Sierra and Denali and son Hunter.
