Press Room: Denali Park Road Open to Mile 31

The portion of the Denali Park Road between the Savage River (Mile 15) and the Teklanika Rest Stop at Mile 31 opened today, Saturday, April 22 for travel by private vehicles. As always the road status is weather dependent, and visitors are advised to call ahead for road and weather conditions. Due to the variable weather at this time of the year, the road may open and close several times during the next month. Motorists should be alert for park equipment and personnel working on the road and for the possibility of encountering mud, snow and ice on the road.

The last day to drive the road to Mile 31 will be Friday, May 19. The road will close to private vehicle traffic past the Savage River when the shuttle buses begin running on Saturday, May 20.

Park facilities west of the Headquarters (Mile 3), such as campgrounds and restrooms, are still closed for the season. The Murie Science and Learning Center is open at Mile 1.3 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily for visitor information and backcountry permits. The Riley Creek Campground at Mile 0.2 is open for free camping until May 15, but water and sewer services will not be available until mid-May. A vault toilet is provided for campers in the loop that remains open during the winter, and water can be obtained at the Murie Science and Learning Center. Additional campgrounds will open May 19 and May 20.

Additional information can be obtained by calling the park at (907) 683-2294 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily or on the web at www.nps.gov/dena.
