The National Park Service
is considering a land exchange in Lake Clark National Park and Preserve.
An environmental assessment detailing the proposed exchange and
the two parcels of land is open for public comment through February
21, 2007.
The properties are located
near Sucker Bay on the southern end of Lake Clark, and near Silver
Salmon Creek along the Cook Inlet Coast. The Southcentral Foundation
owns a 79.98 acre parcel at Sucker Bay and wishes to exchange it
for a 4.95 acre parcel owned by the National Park Service at Silver
Salmon Creek.
The land exchange would
legitimize a long-established camp which was started when the ownership
of the Silver Salmon parcel was still in doubt. Ownership by the
public was affirmed in 2004 by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Soon after, negotiations began which led to the proposed exchange.
The acquisition of the
Sucker Bay property would assist the NPS in protecting sockeye spawning
habitat and in pursuing the NPS conservation objectives for the
Lake Clark shoreline.
The environmental assessment
is available on-line at the NPS public comment website, http://parkplanning.nps.gov,
by choosing Lake Clark National Park from the menu of parks. Comments
may also be made through this web site. Alternatively, copies of
the EA are available by calling Glen Yankus at 644-3535. Comments
may also be mailed to his attention at National Park
Service, 240 West 5th Avenue, Anchorage, AK 99501. -- NPS --
