Marcia Blaszak, Alaska Regional Director of the National
Park Service, yesterday signed the Record of Decision approving
the Denali National Park and Preserve Backcountry Management Plan
and Environmental Impact Statement . The Backcountry Management
Plan is an amendment to the 1986 General Management Plan for Denali,
and will provide guidance on the management of recreational and
administrative activities in all of the park and preserve except
the developed areas along the park road corridor. The Record of
Decision adopts the preferred alternative as presented in the final
plan that was distributed to the public last month.
We very much appreciate the exceptional level of public participation
in the development of the Denalis new backcountry plan,
stated Superintendent Paul Anderson. The active interest of
the State of Alaska, conservation organizations, backcountry user
groups, and thousands of concerned individuals helped make this
a very informed and useful document that will guide our decision-making
in the backcountry for the next 20 years. In developing the
plan over the past 7 years, the National Park Service hosted numerous
public workshops, published two draft plans, held 13 public hearings,
and received over 24,500 written comments.
The National Park Service will now begin to implement provisions
of the plan. Copies of the final plan and the record of decision
may be obtained by writing or calling park headquarters at Denali,
