Park to Celebrate Completion of New Visitor Facilities


Contact: Kris Fister (907) 683-9583 Park to Celebrate Completion of New Visitor Facilities with Special Activities The National Park Service and its partners, the Alaska Railroad Corporation, Alaska Natural History Association and Doyon/ARAMARK Joint Venture, are hosting a variety of special public activities on Thursday, August 18 to celebrate the completion of the new entrance area facilities and the partnerships who have provided the energy and funding to improve the visitor experience in Denali National Park and Preserve. The facilities being showcased during the day’s activities include the Denali Visitor Center, Morino Grill, Denali Bookstore, new passenger shelters and restrooms at the Alaska Railroad depot and the Murie Science and Learning Center. “This celebration is the culmination of almost 10 years of planning and hard work”, stated Park Superintendent Paul Anderson. “The spectacular new facilities that we are celebrating today are the result of these partnerships dedicated to enhancing the experience of those coming to the most-visited portion of the park.” Special activities taking place throughout the day will include: performances by Native Alaskan dancers booksignings by local authors Tom Walker and Lori Yanucchi music by Athabascan fiddler Bill Stevens free cake and refreshments in the Morino Grill area debut of the new interpretive waysides on the history and connections between the railroad and the park a one-hour hike on “Looking for Traces of Denali’s Past” The regularly scheduled programs, such as the sled dog demonstrations, ranger-led hike to Horseshoe Lake, Spruce Loop walks, the Wildlife Tracker educational activity offered through the Denali Institute and the evening campground programs will also be available. The new facilities are located at Mile 1.2 on the Park Road. Parking for vehicles and motorhomes is available in the adjacent lots. The Riley Creek Loop shuttle bus also provides service to the new facilities from the Riley Creek Campground and the Wilderness Access Center.
