Press Room: Come Celebrate Winter!

(01.12.04) The public is invited to participate in the fourth annual Winterfest Celebration takingplace in Denali National Park and its neighboring communities on February 27-29, 2004. This special event showcases the park’s longest season by providing activities and information on how to enjoy winter safely and to have fun! A variety of programs are planned, including snow sculpting, ice carving, dog mushing, guided snowshoe walks/ski tours, and clinics on snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, avalanche safety, winter survival and winter bicycling. The three-day celebration begins on Friday, February 27 at5:30 p.m. with a potluck dinner and presentation at the McKinley Park Community Center, located seven miles south of the Park entrance at Mile 230 on the Parks Highway. An assortment of activities will be available at the Denali National Park Visitor Center from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. The Visitor Center is located at mile 1 on the Park Road. Saturday evening events will include a chili cook-off, home brew contest, women’s hockey game and live music. These activities will take place at Tri-Valley Community Center, located on the Usibelli Spur Road in Healy. Hot drinks and refreshments will be available at the Visitor Center on Saturday and Sunday. Meals, lodging and other services can be obtained in the communities of Healy and Cantwell. Camping is available year-round in the park’s Riley Creek Campground, but the water and sewer utilities have been shut down for the winter. Water is available at park headquarters. Winterfest is a community-wide eventsponsored by the Denali Institute, Denali Foundation, National Park Service, Doyon/ARAMARK Joint Venture, Greater Healy/Denali Chamber of Commerce, Denali Borough School District, and the Denali Citizens Council.
