Objective: Students will learn about national parks and the role the National Park Service plays in protecting and preserving places that are our nation's treasures.

Concepts: Treasures, preservation, value, heritage.

Generalization: The National Park Service takes care of the special places that are America's treasures.

Activity One: Hunt for Treasure!

Students will explore the concepts of "treasure" and "value" by communicating items they treasure in their own lives.

Activity Two: Something Special to Me

Students will continue the discussion from Activity One on the concept of "value". Students will study maps to find items of value to citizens. Class will create a KWL chart on national parks.

Students will use the NPS website to find an assortment of national parks and monuments.

Activity Four:
Our National Treasures

Students will pick a national park to research. They will answer questions about their park and create clues or a riddle for other students to determine their park.

Treasure Maps

Activity Six:
Caretakers of our Treasures

Students will research the concept of national parks and the mission of the National Park Service. They will correlate the message from The Lorax with the purpose of national parks.
