National Parks Treasure Hunt:
Final Activity

Option 1:
Have students create a story or drama depicting why we have national parks. Share their creation with other classrooms. You may want to use The Lorax as a starting point for their new creation.

Option 2:
Using scraps and discarded junk from the classroom or home, have students create a 3-dimensional depiction of their own national park. The park can be a real area they would like to protect, or it can be imaginary. The resources protected in the park can be natural, historical, archaeological, or ideological.

Using the Mission Statement of the National Park Service, have students explain their parks. Students should be able to answer:

What is the name of their park?

Where is their park located?

What are does their park preserve? Why is it valuable?

Why is this park particularly special to them? (i.e., why did they create this park and not another park?)

Is it accessible for citizens to visit and appreciate? What do they learn from going to this park?

Are there opportunities for recreation in at least part of the park? (campgrounds, trails, etc.) How do people get to the park? How will people move around the park?

Why is it important to preserve those things of value in their park? What would happen if those things of value in their park were not preserved?
